King Super 20 Tenor Sax Vintage 1960 era With Original Case

This vintage 1960's King Super 20 Tenor Saxophone. Was manufactured in the early. Cleveland, Ohio by the H. (considered by most professional Jazz horn players as the best).

Hese horns are known as the most legendary jazz horns ever produced. This King Super 20 Series IV Tenor Sax was manufactured between 1964- 1965 - with a serial no. This awesome, sexy, and sensual sounding jazz horn was used by two recording artists that played in, and around the Great Lakes region. It has the desirable under-slung octave (called the accelerated octave key) which sets this horn apart from the newer, and less expensive models that came out around 1975.

It has a silver plated neck, nice engraving on the bell, and keys that are "mother of pearl" inlaid. The horn has a great deal of pad life left, the keys are very responsive, and the horn plays with a light, firm action as it should, to get the best playing response from it.

This sax overall is in excellent playing condition, as it was cared for by the owner since the 1960s, as well as it was serviced fairly recently. This horn does have some minor scratches that is to be expected for its age, the photos that I have listed, try to show them all. It plays with a fat, complex powerful tone!

Intonation is fantastic (as is to be expected of a King Super 20). I can make it play from a whispering sub-tone, to a sassy scream, overall it is in excellent playing condition.

This sax was used by me, Ken McCreight a member of The Velvet Crosswalk a 1970s horn band that recorded a 33 1/3 (vinyl record), and played various concerts in the Great Lakes region. I bought this horn from my sax teacher when I was a young man in a horn band, he was also a recording artist in the 1960's, but he decided after only having it for a year, or two, that he wanted a silver bell. The neck has a small nick, nothing that affects the tone, or sound (see photo). This sax comes with the original partial alligator skin hard case that is very cool. The case is original, and has alligator trim, as shown in the photos, but the stitching is beginning to give out some.

The case is in good working order except for the left clasp that opens cleanly, but there is not much spring action left in the latch, all other clasps on the case work perfectly. The horn comes with an almost new neck strap, and a very new Cannonball mouthpiece (no marks on it). I made this video, and I just put it up on youtube to give you an idea of how this horn sounds. I will use cork on some key rods and pads, as well as packaging materials that will keep the horn, and the case safe in transit. The size will be about 42 x 22 x 17 and weight about 30 lbs.
